MegaDisaster and Obama’s Heroes

MegaDisaster and Obama’s Heroes: We think the Haiti 2010 Earthquake qualifies as what one could call a MegaDisaster. And the USA is right there with them. Fortunately, this is not turning into the debacle like the one we had with Katrina. Yes, its just taken literally two days for aid from the US - and all corners of the world - to land in Haiti.

The last three sentences of this paragraph have changed since we last posted. We did not want to appear ghoulish, but we thought the destruction of Haiti would reach a level of 200,000 fatalities, comparable to the 2004 Tsuanmi. Though this disaster does not (so far...we hope and pray...) present the loss of life as seen in the 2004 Tsunami. The loss of life is striking when you consider that it might be the equivalent of your hometown; like Grand Rapids, Des Moines, Boise, Yonkers, Modesto, Irvine, Fremont and on...passing in one day. Or 6.7 million US citizens passed in one day. Now that should give you some perspective on the current disaster...

Worse and sorry to say, this is only the first disaster of the decade. Is the next one happening now in Caracas? Having just been struck (close by) by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Or the magnitude 4.0 earthquake that struck Oklahoma about 9:18 AM today. Oklahoma?? Brings one closer to Haiti's woes, doesn't it?

Again, US Aid and others are mobilizing aid to Haiti. Which reminds us, our hero, Barack Obama, really did deserve that Nobel Peace Prize - didn't he? He wasted very little time in the Haitian call for aid. Shame, shame... Yes, the people mobilizing the aid effort and the people transporting the aid and themselves to Haiti are now heroes. You might disagree (like Rush...but, Rush has done some good things...), but some of them are Obama's Heroes. But, apparently, there were warnings...

And there should be wasting no time in getting aid and resources to a country like Haiti (or any other in desperate circumstances...). For god's sake, some of the poor folks have to live on dirt. They actually make cookies out of mostly dirt (which are bought and sold, for God's sake...) and they call them bon bon terre. They might throw in a little sugar, flour and some stuff that is actually edible. Haiti was a horrible economic and ecological disaster before the quake.

So why should you contribute and make that donation? Selfishness. That's right - selfishness. Because if you don't, they will have to leave their homes in Haiti and move in right next door to you. That's right. And, the image of one dead child should move anyone to tears.

And if the dead are left unburied, they will have to leave. Before the disease sets in. Diseases like typhus and cholera and God help them.

Sparack or Bock

Sparack or Bock: The nerdy conceptual collision of Spock and Barack Obama. To describe Obama's logical persona and demeanor and/or facade via analogies with Star Trek. Not to be confused with Bock beer.

Turdshiner-in-Chief

Coprolite image licensed under Creative Commons by AlishaV

Turdshiner-in-Chief: Not entirely our term, but building on the brilliant John Stewart's and TDS's presentation of 11/17/09, "Submission Accomplished". (1) Suggested nickname for any president that has to 'pick up and shine' the turds left behind by the previous administration for public or diplomatic review. (As always, Aasif Mandvi gives a hilarious, manic performance). (2) The real job of any next new presidential administration.

Instant Peace Prize or 10-Day Prize

Instant Peace Prize / 10-Day Prize: The slightly unfortunate portmanteau of Instant coffee and Nobel Peace Prize. With reference to President Obama's unprecedented winning of the prize even though only in-office (officially...) for ten days prior to the deadline for nomination. As we have publicly stated, would Mr. Obama be seen as 'courageous' (and generous) if he offered to share the prize with other champions of peace? Do these events in the timeline diminish the prestige of the prize?

Zerobama

Zero per gallon image licensed under Creative Commons by richardmasoner

Zerobama: The very unfortunate portmanteau of zero (score) and Obama. Our favorite leader is not getting the numbers he needs in the 'win' column (of last week). Lesson: go for the 'win-win'. Don't get us wrong: we've always supported him and always likely will.

The White Ale House or The White Public House

The White Ale House / The White Public House: The (unfortunate?) collision of The White House with Public House or Ale House. We know, we know, 'The Beer Summit', 'Beer Diplomacy', we believe we've heard it all too. And, we know 17th century humor doesn't translate well to our time.

References: Obama more bartender than mediator at beer summit, Hopes for 'positive lesson' from beer chat, Ale House or Public House, The White House, Barack Obama, Henry Louis Gates, Henry Louis Gates arrest.

Sarah Hardcastle

Sarah Hardcastle: Sigh...we debated this one...it is the (unfortunate?) combination of Sarah Palin with the name of the fictional heroine Kate Hardcastle from Goldsmith's enduring play: She Stoops to Conquer. By resigning her governorship, we wonder, is she really planning a Nixonian rise from her political ashes to that of the Presidency? Are we looking at the first female President of the USA in 2013? (Sorry Hilary!). Is she planning her political ascendency a la Obama? Don't get us wrong, we recognize the lampoonery she has endured (suffered?) of late at the hands of the media and her critics. But, it is evident that this lady might have some fight left in her (a la Richard Nixon...).

Cadi11ac or Cad11ac

Cadillac image licensed under Creative Commons by dave_7

Cadi11ac / Cad11ac: The unfortunate (and rather tragic) combination of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and GM's high-end, luxury vehicle division. Suggested pronunciation: cad-ih-eleven-ack or cad-eleven-ack.

References: No - we are not waiting with wicked glee for the bankruptcy of GM nor any of its divisions. This website is authored and edited by former Detroiters with relatives formerly employed (since retired) by GM. But (unlike the O-POD) we're fairly certain of the economic chaos that is sure to follow after this one. Actually, we're fairly depressed over it. GM bosses discuss bankruptcy plan, GM files for bankruptcy, announces plant closings and Interactive timeline: GM's road to bankruptcy.

O-FLOD or I-FLOD or F-FLOD

Michelle Obama image licensed under Creative Commons by Wendy Piersall (@eMom)

O-FLOD / I-FLOD / F-FLOD: Original- or Initial- or First-First Lady of Diversity. (Michelle Obama). Not a new acronym, but appears to be a new definition. We wanted to avoid using the last acronym due to the obvious opportunities to those to use an unfortunate expletive or two in the redefinition of the same. Of course, it could also be redefined to read: "First-First Lady of Divinity". Which we wouldn't want, because we have just fallen head over heels in love (no, no, not that kind of love...gee whiz...) with our First Lady as most people have.

Which leads to the next acronym, the S-FLOD: the Second First Lady of Diversity. Or will it be the F-FMOD: the First-First Man of Diversity? We wonder...

Mc-Palin

Mc-Palin: We came up with this slightly snotty appellation for the McCain-Palin campaign when writing our blog post for The American Political Handbook: Race-Baiting & Fear-Mongering = Civil War? Please Note: Jonah Goldberg of the LA Times has already used this term, but under slightly different circumstances in his piece, "McPalin Rattles Team Obama."
